NVR looks like a talent test and is actually a method test. Children taught to interrogate shapes property-by-property — sides, shading, rotation, count — reliably overtake 'naturally spatial' guessers. The good news for worried parents is that non-verbal reasoning responds to practice faster than almost any other 11+ paper, because success comes from a repeatable scanning routine rather than from vocabulary a child either has or hasn't met. What non-verbal reasoning tests, and who sets it
Non-verbal reasoning (NVR) asks children to spot rules in pictures, shapes and patterns with no words involved. Because it sidesteps reading age and curriculum coverage, selective schools value it as a leveller. In 2026 the dominant provider is GL Assessment, whose NVR papers are multiple-choice with answers marked on a separate sheet; the older CEM 11+ was largely phased out around 2022-2023, so most former CEM regions now sit GL or bespoke papers. Essex families sit the CSSE consortium exam, and many independent seniors use the ISEB Common Pre-Test — but the shape-reasoning skills below transfer across all of them. A typical GL NVR section runs to roughly 50 minutes, which leaves only about 35 to 50 seconds per question, so accuracy and speed have to grow together.

The property checklist that unlocks every question
Almost every NVR item changes one or more of a small set of visual properties. Teach your child to scan them in the same order every time, out loud at first:
- Number of sides or elements — count the shapes, dots or lines.
- Shading and fill — black, white, striped, dotted, half-filled.
- Size — is the shape growing, shrinking or alternating?
- Orientation — which way does an arrow or flag point?
- Position — where does an element sit inside the frame?
- Line thickness and style — thin, thick, solid, dashed.
- Symmetry — is there a mirror line, and has it moved?
- Rotation direction — clockwise or anticlockwise, and how far.
The single biggest cause of lost marks is a second simultaneous change: a child spots that the shape rotated but misses that the shading also flipped. Scanning the full checklist catches both.
Worked example: a matrix
Imagine a three-by-three grid where the missing cell is bottom-right. Read the rows first: across each row, one circle is added, so the top row has one circle, the middle two, the bottom three. Now read the columns: down each column the shape's shading darkens from white to grey to black. The answer must therefore satisfy both rules at once — three circles (row rule) that are black (column rule). Naming the row-rule and column-rule as two separate statements stops children from picking an option that only fits one of them, which is exactly how the wrong answers are designed to tempt.
Rotation versus reflection: the classic trap
These two are the most confused pair in NVR. A rotation turns the whole shape around a point — a 90-degree clockwise turn sends the top edge to the right. A reflection flips it across a mirror line, so a shape and its reflection are 'handed', like your left and right hands. The quick test: an 'F' rotated 180 degrees is upside-down but still reads left-to-right; an 'F' reflected across a vertical line becomes backwards. If your child can articulate that difference, a whole band of questions opens up. The same care applies to nets and cubes: there are eleven valid cube nets, and the golden rule is that faces which are opposite on the finished cube are never directly adjacent on the flat net.
Timing, scoring and how to practise
GL results are reported as a Standardised Age Score (SAS), roughly on a 70-140 scale with 100 as the average. Crucially, the raw score is adjusted for a child's exact age in months, so a summer-born child is not disadvantaged against an autumn-born classmate. Many grammar schools look for around 111 or above, but the exact qualifying mark varies by area and year, so treat any single number with caution and check your target school directly through the grammar school directory.
