Rounding anchors estimation questions ('roughly how much…'), which examiners use to separate calculators from thinkers. Place value and rounding sit right at the heart of the 11+ maths paper: they underpin nearly every other topic, from decimals and money to multi-step word problems. In a typical GL Assessment maths test — now the dominant provider across most UK grammar-school regions since CEM's separate 11+ tests were phased out around 2022-2023 — number and place value questions carry a meaningful slice of the marks and reward children who work quickly and accurately without a calculator.

What 11+ place value and rounding questions cover

At 11+ level, place value means far more than knowing "the 4 is in the tens column". Children read and compare numbers up to millions (and into decimals with three places), identify the value of a digit in context, order mixed sets of whole numbers and decimals, and use their understanding to estimate. Rounding then layers on top: rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and, crucially, to the nearest whole number and to one or two decimal places. The National Curriculum introduces most of this in Years 4 and 5, but the 11+ pushes well beyond school level. A Year 5 classroom might ask a child to round 3,472 to the nearest 100; a Greater Depth 11+ question asks them to estimate 4,981 × 19 by rounding both numbers first, then judge whether the estimate is larger or smaller than the true answer. That reasoning step — knowing your estimate's direction of error — is exactly what the GL paper prizes.

A fully worked example: rounding and estimating

Take a classic exam-style question: Estimate 6,148 + 2,970 by rounding each number to the nearest thousand. Here is the method, step by step:

  1. Find the rounding digit. For the nearest thousand, look at the thousands column: 6,148 and 2,970.
  2. Check the digit to its right. In 6,148 the hundreds digit is 1 (less than 5), so round down to 6,000. In 2,970 the hundreds digit is 9 (5 or more), so round up to 3,000.
  3. Add the rounded numbers. 6,000 + 3,000 = 9,000.
  4. Sense-check against the exact answer. The true total is 9,118, so 9,000 is a sensible estimate — and because we rounded one number down and one up, the errors partly cancel.

The golden rule your child should chant is simple: 5 or more, round up; 4 or less, round down. The digit immediately to the right of the rounding place is the only one that decides.

How the skill appears in a real GL 11+ paper

On a GL maths paper the question is multiple choice: your child reads the problem, works it on scrap or in their head, then shades a single bubble (A-E) on a separate OMR answer sheet. There is no calculator and no working credit — only the bubble counts, so neat transfer matters. Budget roughly one minute per maths question; a straightforward rounding item should take far less, banking time for the multi-step word problems later in the paper. Difficulty progression: Year 5 to exam level

An easier Year 5 version asks: "Round 3,472 to the nearest hundred." An exam-level Year 6 version asks: "A stadium holds 48,619 people. Rounded to the nearest thousand, roughly how many is that, and is the true figure higher or lower than your estimate?" Same core skill, three layers of reasoning.
