The classic traps GL builds in
These are engineered, not accidental. Knowing them by name means your child recognises the pitfall instead of falling into it.
- The half-rule trap: an option matches one clause of your sentence but breaks another. If your rule is fully stated, this option cannot survive step two.
- The over-general rule: a rule so loose that two options both fit. That means your sentence is not specific enough — add the missing detail (shading, count or orientation) until only one answer remains.
- Rotation dressed as reflection: a turned shape and a mirrored shape can look alike at a glance. A rotation preserves the 'handedness' of the figure; a reflection flips it. Check an asymmetric detail to tell them apart.
- The red herring: an eye-catching feature that changes randomly and is there only to distract. Focus on what is consistent across the whole group, not the loudest element.
