What a reflection question looks like
You are shown one shape and a mirror line — usually vertical, sometimes horizontal, occasionally diagonal. Below sit five options labelled A to E. Exactly one is the true mirror image; the others are decoys built by rotating the shape, shifting an internal detail, or leaving it unreflected. The task is to pick the genuine reflection. Reflection is a 'flip', not a 'turn': a reflected shape reads like the original seen in a mirror, so left-hand features swap to the right (for a vertical line) and everything keeps its up-down order.
The step-by-step method
Teach your child this exact sequence and have them run it every single time, even on easy-looking questions:
- Fix the mirror line first. Is it vertical (left-right flip), horizontal (up-down flip), or diagonal? The line decides everything that follows.
- Pick two or three checkpoints. Choose asymmetric details — an arrow, a dot in one corner, a shaded triangle, a short tail. Symmetric features tell you nothing, so ignore them.
- Predict, then match. For a vertical line, anything on the left moves to the right and points the opposite way; up-down stays put. Say it out loud: 'arrow was pointing left, so it must now point right.'
- Eliminate. Cross off any option where a checkpoint is wrong. Process of elimination is faster than hunting for the perfect answer.
- Confirm the survivor. Check one last detail on the option left standing before you commit.
The single most powerful classroom trick is the 'letter F' test. A capital F has no symmetry, so a reflected F is instantly recognisable as backwards. Ask your child to imagine the messiest asymmetric part of the shape as an F and check whether it has flipped the right way.
Reflection versus rotation — the confusable pair
The commonest wrong answer in a reflection question is a rotated shape, because at a glance a flip and a turn can look alike. They are not. A reflection reverses 'handedness' — a left glove becomes a right glove — while a rotation preserves it. Test it with an asymmetric mark: after a vertical reflection, an arrow that pointed left now points right but stays at the same height; after a 180° rotation it points right and jumps to the opposite corner. Drilling reflection and rotation technique side by side is the fastest way to stop a child mixing them up.
The classic traps
- Reflecting the outline but not the inside. Children flip the overall shape correctly but forget a shaded segment or an internal line. Always reflect the details, not just the frame.
- Using the wrong mirror axis. If the line is horizontal, top and bottom swap — not left and right. Read the line before you flip.

- Missing a second simultaneous change. A decoy may be reflected correctly but have one extra dot or a thicker line. Scan every attribute.
- Assuming symmetry. If a shape looks identical after 'reflecting' it, that feature was symmetric and proves nothing — switch to a different checkpoint.
