One of the kindest things about Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) is that it does not depend on vocabulary or reading speed. Children who struggle in English often pick it up quickly, and children with strong literacy do not have an automatic advantage. That is why so many parents call NVR the great equaliser of the 11-plus: it rewards clear, patient looking rather than years of reading at home, which makes it one of the fairest and most trainable parts of the whole exam.
What NVR actually measures
NVR tests spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, working memory and visual concentration. None of these are fixed talents; every one of them improves with little-and-often practice. In GL Assessment papers, NVR sits alongside English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning (VR) as one of the four skill areas, and it is almost always multiple-choice, marked on a separate OMR answer sheet, with no calculator and tight timing of roughly 35 to 50 seconds per question. Because the questions are pictures and shapes rather than words, a child who reads slowly is not held back, and a bright child who has coasted on vocabulary suddenly has to think from scratch.

How to read a matrix: name the two rules
Matrices frighten children until they learn one habit: solve the rows and columns separately. Take a 3x3 grid with the bottom-right cell missing. Read along the top row first and ask, what changes left to right? Perhaps the shape gains one line each step (the row rule). Then read down the right column and ask, what changes top to bottom? Perhaps the shading flips from white to grey to black (the column rule). The missing cell must obey both at once. Naming the row-rule and the column-rule out loud stops children guessing from the answer options and gives you, the parent, a simple script for marking at home.
Rotation versus reflection: the confusable pair
The single most common NVR trap is mixing up rotation and reflection. A rotation turns the whole shape around a point, so a flag pointing right becomes a flag pointing down after a 90-degree clockwise turn; every part keeps the same handedness. A reflection flips the shape across a mirror line, so a shape that leaned right now leans left, like your hand in a mirror. Quick test for your child: if a letter R still reads as R after the change it was rotated; if it now reads backwards it was reflected. Drilling this one distinction lifts NVR scores fast.
Nets and cubes without the panic
3D questions ask children to fold a flat net into a cube, or unfold a cube back to its net. Two rules cover most of them. First, there are exactly eleven valid arrangements that fold into a cube, and it is worth printing them once so the shape becomes familiar. Second, and more powerful: on any net, faces that touch edge-to-edge can never end up opposite each other on the cube. So if you want the face opposite a marked square, count one face along and skip, or find the face separated from it by exactly one other. The visual attributes to scan every time
Whatever the family, winning answers come from scanning the same short checklist before looking at the options:
- Number of sides or elements
- Shading and fill (white, grey, black, striped)
- Size (growing, shrinking, constant)
- Orientation and rotation
- Position of a marker inside the shape
- Line thickness and style (solid, dashed)
- Symmetry and reflection
- Added or missing lines
Watch for two changes happening at once, the classic red herring. A child who spots the shading change and stops will miss the size change and pick a plausible wrong answer.
Timing and how NVR feeds the score
GL NVR papers usually run around 45 to 50 minutes. With roughly one question a minute or faster, teach a skip-and-return plan: if a question is not cracked within about 40 seconds, mark the answer sheet lightly, move on, and come back. Every question counts the same, so leaving hard ones to steal time from easy ones costs marks. Results are reported as a Standardised Age Score (SAS), typically on a scale from about 69 to 141 with 100 as average.
