The single biggest predictor of 11+ maths speed isn't clever problem-solving — it's instant recall of number facts. Times tables, doubles and halves, number bonds, and the decimal-fraction-percentage equivalents that show up in almost every paper. A child who has to work out 7 × 8 each time it appears loses two or three seconds, and those seconds compound across fifty questions until they run out of time on the last page. This guide explains exactly which facts matter, why they matter so much in the current GL-dominated 11+, and how to build genuine fluency at home in five minutes a day.
Why number facts win the 11+
Most 11+ maths sits with GL Assessment now, after CEM's separate paper tests were phased out around 2022-2023 and many former CEM regions moved to GL or bespoke papers. A GL maths paper is typically 50 questions in around 50 minutes — roughly a minute a question — multiple-choice with answers A-E marked on a separate OMR answer sheet, and no calculator. That format rewards children who don't have to think about the arithmetic underneath the reasoning.
Consider a two-mark question that asks for the area of a compound shape, then a fraction of that area. The maths method might be easy for your child, but if each individual multiplication and each times-table fact needs working out longhand, the clock beats them. Fluent number facts free up working memory for the actual problem — the shape, the units, the trick in the wording. That is why fluency, not raw cleverness, so often separates a pass from a near-miss.
It also feeds the score directly. A raw score is converted into a Standard Age Score (SAS), age-adjusted on a scale of roughly 69-141 where 100 is average, and many grammar schools look for around 111 or above (exact marks vary by area and year). Speed lets a child attempt more questions, and attempted questions are the only ones that can earn marks.
The core facts every 11+ child needs on instant recall
Fluency means answering in under three seconds, without counting on fingers. Build these in layers:
- Times tables to 12 × 12, forwards and — crucially — backwards (division): if 7 × 8 = 56 is automatic, so is 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
- Number bonds to 10, 100 and 1000, so change and column subtraction are instant.
- Doubles and halves of numbers to 100, and of common larger numbers (double 45, half of 260).
- Square numbers to 15² and the first few cube numbers, plus their square roots.

If your child knows that ⅛ = 0.125 = 12.5% without pausing, they save fifteen seconds on at least one question in every paper — and they stop making conversion slips. A worked example: why fluency saves the clock
Take 7 × 8 × 5, a typical building block inside a longer word problem. A child who has to reconstruct each fact might guess or stall. A fluent child spots the friendly route: 7 × 8 = 56 (instant), then 56 × 5 is the same as 56 × 10 ÷ 2 = 560 ÷ 2 = 280. That "×5 = ×10 then halve" shortcut only works if the underlying doubling and halving are automatic. Number facts are what make mental-maths shortcuts possible — the two go hand in hand.
Contrast a common wrong turn: a rushed child multiplies 7 × 8 correctly but then does 56 × 5 as repeated addition, drops a carry, and writes 275. The fluency isn't just faster; it's also more accurate, because fewer steps means fewer chances to slip.
Building fluency at home in five minutes a day
Short and daily beats long and occasional. Fluency is a memory-and-retrieval skill, so frequent, low-pressure recall is what builds it — an hour on Sunday does far less than five focused minutes each weekday.
- Quick-fire quiz. Two minutes at the breakfast table: rapid times-table and bond questions, mixed order, no calculator.
- Beat-your-time. One column of 20 facts, timed; record the time and try to beat it tomorrow. Progress is motivating.
- Say the equivalence set aloud. Run through the FDP table above once a day until it is automatic.
- Interleave. Mix easy Year 4/5 recall with a couple of Year 6 exam-level applications so facts transfer into real questions.

Common exam traps to avoid
- Knowing tables one way only. Children who never drill division facts freeze on "56 ÷ 7". Always practise both directions.
- Deriving equivalents mid-paper. Working out 3/8 as a decimal from scratch wastes the time fluency was meant to save. Memorise the set.
- Fluency without accuracy. Fast but wrong scores nothing. Build speed on top of correct recall, never instead of it.
- Losing the last sentence. A worded problem often changes the question at the very end ("...how much change?"). Fluent arithmetic frees the attention to catch it.
